Aucun pays au monde ne semble avoir suscité autant d’images fantastiques, fascinantes et contradictoires que le Tibet. Au cours des XIXe et XXe siècles, comme ce merveilleux pays du toit du monde devint progressivement le but de nombre de voyageurs et chercheurs, de nouvelles images se formèrent dans différentes parties du monde. Ces deux volumes retracent pour la première fois l’évolution, les caractéristiques et l’influence de ces images du Tibet dans une perspective embrassant l’orient et l’occident. Vingt-cinq contributions de spécialistes européens, américains, chinois et japonais présentent et analysent des images du Tibet et du bouddhisme tibétain. En suivant leur évolution et leur impact, ces études traitent de sujets à large portée en allant du développement de la tibétologie et des études bouddhiques jusqu’à l’histoire des idées en Orient comme en Occident.
