Beschreibung
The main focus of this book is the relationship between religion and the state in India. Written by a team of experienced authors, it analyses the nature and the origins of 'Indian secularism', and whether 'communalism' in India just a product of colonial policy and modernisation. Furthermore, it questions if the state’ in India has generally been a benign or disruptive influence on public religious life and if a tradition of practical toleration in Indian society exists.
Structured around six key arenas of interaction between state and religion, namely (1) cow worship and sacrifice (2) control of temples and shrines (3) religious festivals and processions (4) proselytising and conversion (5) communal riots and (6) religious teaching/doctrine, and family law, the book offers a coherent analysis of the relationship between religion and the state in a historical continuum. It also identifies points of similarity and contrast between periods and regimes. [Verlagsinformation]
